What Does the State’s Attorney Do?

The State’s Attorney is the highest law enforcement authority in the county and should have an extensive breadth and depth of experience in order to advise others.


She is the chief prosecutor on behalf of the county. The role also involves presenting the case against defendants, deciding on criminal charges, and recommending sentences.

Key responsibilities of a state’s attorney:

  • Assisting victims of crime:  They prepare victims for testifying, discuss possible outcomes, and collect restitution.
  • Filing charges:  They can decide which criminal charges to file against suspects.
  • Working with the courts: They participate in grand jury proceedings and guide the sentencing recommendations for offenders.
